AMBITIOUS plans for the £1.25 million transformation of a village community centre were unveiled during a special fun day this weekend.

The proposals for the Luddenden Foot Civic Institute, Station Road, would see the early 20th century building transformed into a vibrant modern structure complete with glass extension, a new third floor within the building, and special areas for a cafe, an IT suite and a children’s playgroup. A glass terrace would look out on to neighbouring Holmes Park.

The designs, which went on display during a mini gala day at the centre and park, were given a big thumbs up by dozens of visitors.

Gill Smith-Moorhouse, chairwoman of Luddenden Foot Community Association which commissioned the proposals, said: “This building should be the very centre of community life and if we can make these proposals a reality that’s exactly what it will be.

“Today’s gala was about getting people down here to look at these plans and give us their views, as well as celebrating all that’s great about Luddenden Foot, and people seem very positive. They are excited.”

She added the building – which is owned by Calderdale Council but is in the process of being transferred to the asso-ciation – could then be used by church groups, youth clubs and for weddings and receptions.

Business units could be installed while a small library facility may be incorporated.

After a presentation by architect Phil Hawdon, of local firm Hawdon Russell, the day continued with cream teas served on the patio, and the chance to have some fun in the park.

Children enjoyed inflatable slides and a bouncy castle, while a variety of stalls sold cakes, plants and bric-a-brac.

A radio roadshow played a selection of modern hits and youngsters had the chance to win a prize on a hook-the-duck competition.

Mr Hawdon said: “Luddenden Foot is a fabulous place and the fun and games of today just prove that – now what we’re hoping to do is give the place a community centre it can be proud of.”
