Education, Access and Community Projects
We have been involved in civic schemes of urban regeneration including restoration of shop fronts, public realm improvements, creating public squares and covered streets. Community projects range from community centres and community shops, schools and churches, and specialist community services organisations
SureStart Children’s Centre, Halifax
“Warley Road School has employed Hawdon Russell Architects for three years, during which time they have worked on a number of significant projects, including the provision of a Children’s Centre for school and community use. We continue to use them because we have been very satisfied with the quality and efficiency of the service that they have provided. The whole school has benefited from the significant improvements to the school building. The Children’s Centre is a delight to work in because of the way it has been designed.”
Warley Road School Business Manager
We have worked on new nursery schools, creating new children’s centres within existing school buildings, upgrading primary and special needs schools, creating a performance centre out of a school gymnasium, upgrading swimming pool facilities and carrying out upgrading work in a local college.
We have designed a recording studio for a talking books provider.
Our continuing work with Leonard Cheshire Disability is all about creating access. We have also carried out access work on schools, public buildings and private houses and have provided access audits for organisations.
We have carried out feasibility studies in relation to a community sports centre, the replacement of a community meeting room and shop and the major upgrading and expansion of a community institute. Some of these are currently seeking funding with a view to going ahead as building projects.
A number of our projects have involved a significant amount of public participation including working closely with community groups, presenting schemes in formal and informal meetings, seeking out and assimilating community responses.
In conjunction with Calderdale Community Foundation we have worked with local organisations on schemes such as new sports facilities, converting a former barn and cottage into a youth club, a juice bar converted out of a pub and a new cricket pavilion.
We continue to work with Age Concern and have created their main support centre in Halifax as well as various outlets in the area. We have also worked with Calderdale Citizens Advice Bureau towards improving their client interview suite and rationalising their administration accommodation.
We have managed several refurbishment projects for the Calderdale and Kirklees Women’s Centres.
